Over the centuries Latvian building
crafts traditions evolved to a compromise between aesthetics and
practicality. Classical styles have been amended and adapted to the
local needs and capabilities. Even today we can find reed, wood shake
and shingle imitation roofs as well as modern roof coverings. Roof
construction can include decorative baroque, but also simple and
contemporary details. The following details have been used in the
reconstruction of historical buildings: a joining method known as knee,
wood hinges, keys in wood cases, wood keys, wood gutters. Such
methodology, which refreshes and enriches our surroundings, is often
used by the Latvian builders. Modern amenities such as showers,
jacuzzis, modern bathrooms, saunas and bedroom layouts are easily
incorporated into log homes. |
